Along the shore of the lake Maggiore, between Arona and Castelletto Ticino, the Special Natural Reserve of the Cane Fields of Dormelletto stretches out about four kilometres long and occupies an area of 157 hectares. The Piedmont Region, in accordance with the Municipality and the Ente di Gestione dei Parchi e delle Riserve del Lago Maggiore (Managing Organisation of Parks and Reserves of Lake Maggiore), intends to protect and use this environment by respecting its naturalistic properties.
Nature
The landscape is characterised by a striking contrast between an extremely anthropic environment, an agricultural unit with a beautiful landscape (Villa Tesio), thoroughbred horse-breeding centre of the Dormello-Olgiata breed, and the remaining shore vegetation that consists of fragmental arboreal coenosis and continuous high herbage along the coast with many areas of canes.
This area is important for birdlife (about one hundred species of nidifiers, winterers and "passers"). The study and ringing activity of birds, supported by the park's staff by means of qualified and authorised employees, have two operating centres inserted within the context of intemational research at the cane fields of Dormelletto and Fondotoce.
History
The archaeological points of this area are considerably important: they date back to the Ancient Bronze Age, in che IV-V century A.D. Recently a roman settlement has been discovered and many interesting churches and villages can be visited following the itinerary
From th park all around (in English).
