THE FONDOTOCE RINGING CENTRE

The Fondotoce Ringing Centre (operative, even if only partially, since 1992) started its full activity in 2001, with the aim to monitoring the bird population of the reed throughout the year, particulary during the spring and autumn migration period and contributing to the data collection for "EURING SWALLOW PROJECT" and "ALPS PROJECT".

During 2004, in 175 working days, 30.517 birds have been captured and ringed and 95 birds, already ringed in other countries, have been recovered.

It's possible to have more details of ringing records and recoveries by the link at the end of the page.

The Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) has been the most frequently captured species: 24.162 ringed individuals and 70 foreign recoveries constitute an important sample, on international level as well.
A further analysis of the collected data is currently carried out by the researchers and, by the continuation of ringing activity in the following years, many other useful information could be achieved (frequentation of the roost per sex and age classes, choice and attachment to the spot).

The records relevant to Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) show a quite interesting number of captures as well: 1.049 ringed birds plus 113 recoveries occurred the year before. The researchers are currently working on the analysis of biometric data, from which is already possible to advance some useful information about the nesting population in Fondotoce.

Paddyfield Warbler

It is worth underlining the capture of some peculiar species such as Paddyfield Warbler (Acrocephalus agricola) first report in Piemonte and Sardinian Warbler (Sylvia melanocephala) and Common Rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus) first report in this area.

Many people have visited the Fondotoce Ringing Centre throughout its time of activity, and they proved to be quite interested in the researches.

The Park Authority wishes to thank the professionals in charges of the researches (Giuseppe La Gioia, Dario Piacentini e Ariele Magnani) and the several volunteers who contributed to the scientific activities.
