The peak looking down on Dormelletto and the lake shore and, on the opposite side, the greater part of the Park's eastern border, gave its name to the village more than 2,000 years ago. In fact Dormello means "door hilltop", that is to say, "fortress hilltop". St. Mary's church had been consecrated two centuries earlier (1122 - 1151). It is in fact a Roman building, whose single aisle was much altered during the following centuries. Still recognizable are the wall decorations on the southern side and the buttress marking the spans. The bell tower dates back to 1634. Inside you can find a splendid Rosary Chapel (which can be dated about 1620), rich in stuccoes and frescoes with the Passion, the Crucifixion and the Burial of Christ. The niche in the far side shelter the Rosary Madonna, a wooden statue by Arona's wood carver Bartolomeo Tiberino.
